Library Spotlight: Thursday, August 11

Spotlight:  Science Month at the Library!

Libraries are not just book places, but are also people spaces with lots of fun activities happening for young and old.

Participants who attended the Make it! session on Wednesday, August 10 at 3.30pm had a great time, learning to draw in 3D.  The human hand, chasms in the pavement, a surreal pathway were all part of the session.  Don’t worry if you missed it – come along on Wednesday, August 24, at 3.30pm – where the handicraft will be a collage constructed out of scrap material.

Ring the library on 6740 2190 for further information and to book a place – the program is for the young, and the young at heart!

Children, and adults, can also test their knowledge of science by locating 10 science-related items scattered throughout the library.  Using your entry form, name the item, and the branch of science it represents, hand in your form and be in the running for a great library goodie bag!  You’re got the whole month to complete the form.

Spotlight:  Magazines

No time for reading?  Not a problem – borrow a magazine instead!  The library holds a range of magazines covering topics from finance to science, from gardening to parenting, from handicrafts to self help and health.

As the titles come out once a month, you’re sure to find relevant, up-to-date information in short, easy-to-read articles that don’t take much time to cover.  Some of the magazines are shelved with the books on the same topics, so ask the friendly staff if you’re interested in a particular title.

Spotlight:  New books

A nice bag of new books has been added to the shelves this week.

Among the titles are the delightful children’s book The Snowman by Michael Morpurgo.  It’s “a new story inspired by the Christmas class by Raymond Briggs”.

Mark Stephens has written Mind Free: The Breakthrough Mindful Self-Hypnosis Method.  It’s an Australian publication, easy to read with plenty of information boxes and lots of strategies to use against “negative thoughts, stress, insomnia, weight issues and more”.

Also published in Australia is The Female Investor: Creating Wealth, Security and Freedom Through Property  by Nicola McDougall and Kate Hill.  Then there’s The Sustainable Home: Easy Ways to Live with Nature in Mind by Ida Magntorn, a great little book packed full of good ideas for every room in the house.

New fiction books include The Ghosts of Paris by Tara Moss.  The book is described as “a cracking thriller, with a marvellous, strong, flamboyant heroine”.  And by Pulitzer Prize winner Geraldine Brooks comes Horse “… the latest masterpiece from a writer with a prodigious talent for bringing the past to life”.

Remember, reading is dreaming with your eyes open!
